2018 winner Solaxess
Solaxess is developing and marketing a nano-technology film that can be used to manufacture totally uniform white or light-coloured photovoltaic panels (totally hidden photovoltaic cells).
Thanks to this technology, the PV panel becomes a construction element in its own right and can therefore be integrated aesthetically into the building. The "active" building envelope is entering the 2.0 era. Facades become active and aesthetically pleasing.
Our innovative technology acts like a "selective mirror", reflecting visible light energy while allowing near-infrared rays to pass through. This feature allows the PV panel to appear perfectly white to the naked eye, hiding the solar cells, while maintaining excellent conversion efficiency.
2018 finalist Enuu
Enuu makes light electric vehicles available free of charge (up to three free journeys per day per user).
The company has an atypical business model in that it derives part of its revenue from advertising on its vehicles and in the smartphone application. Enuu has 7 employees and 2 senior advisors. The company launched a trial phase of its service on the EPFL campus at the beginning of May and will soon be launching its service for the general public in the city of Biel in August.
Enuu is working with EPFL laboratories to make its fleet of vehicles autonomous and to optimise operations in the field using algorithms.
2018 finalist Oculight
OCULIGHT offers specialist daylight consultancy services to promote human health and wellbeing in the built environment.
Using unique modelling tools derived directly from research, we assess daylight at eye level in a dynamic and interactive way to understand building performance from a human perspective.
Our approach complements traditional lighting consultancy by considering the building as an environment in which occupants must achieve physiological and psychological well-being over time and space. Our research has gained international recognition for its ability to transcend disciplinary boundaries and provide new solutions at their interfaces.
The start-up is based in Lausanne and the team is made up of its three co-founders, based in Switzerland, Iceland and the USA, who bring complementary expertise and experience.
